A Protein Diet is a method based upon manufactured
foods, which have a protein content of 80% or higher. Professor Blackburn
of Harvard University, who often treated patients with obesity weighing
in excess of 300 Pounds, invented it.
In specialized private clinics, patients were only permitted to eat
protein food substitutes. The other necessary vitamins and minerals were
supplied in a medicinal form.
Traditionally, it is one of the
faster dieting methods. But because of the social, psychological and
economic difficulties encountered, it has traditionally only been applied
to patients whose obesity had been diagnosed as extreme.
However, if the
cause of the obesity is not diagnosed and treated, then the same rebound
effect could result as with other forms of dieting. As always, after this
form of treatment, a re-education towards food-intake management would be
required.
The loss of only a few pounds for a person with obesity can theoretically
add 3-4 months to their lifespan, so all possible means towards weight
reduction have to be considered by health professionals.
